DOWNSTREAM

The downstream oil and gas sector encompasses operations such as the refining of petroleum crude oil and the processing and purifying of raw natural gas, as well as the marketing and distribution of products derived from crude oil and natural gas such as gasoline, kerosene, jet fuel, diesel oil, lubricants, plastics, asphalt, liquid natural gas (LNG), and numerous petrochemicals. Companies operating in the downstream oil and gas sector face a fluctuating business landscape including volatility in crude oil and petroleum product prices, constantly evolving environmental regulations, and challenges in terms of distribution, transportation, and other logistics. BVA professionals have a deep understanding of the issues faced by participants in the downstream oil and gas sector, enabling us to provide our clients with insightful and efficient consulting regarding valuation, economic damages, and various corporate finance issues.

 

Northern Tier Energy is an independent downstream energy company that engages in refining, retail, and pipeline operations in the United States.  The company operates through two segments, Refining and Retail.  The Refining segment operates a 97,800 barrels per stream day refinery that offers refined products, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and asphalt to resellers and consumers.  The Retail segment operates convenience stores under the SuperAmerica brand name, which sell various grades of gasoline and diesel; tobacco products; and immediately consumable items comprising beverages, prepared food, and various snacks and prepackaged items.  BVA has provided services to assist with financial reporting of certain phantom units to Northern Tier Energy.

YCI Methanol One, LLC, a U.S. subsidiary of Shandong Yuhuang Chemical Co. Ltd., was established in January 2013 to build and operate a chemical complex for the production of methanol in St. James Parish, Louisiana.  BVA has performed valuations for incentive-based compensation in accordance with IRC 409A for YCI.
